東アフリカ地域の石油ガス市場の規模は、2015年段階でCAPEX(資本支出)にして41億9000万ドルに達すると推計されます。このCAPEXには上流の探査開発(E&D)および中流のインフラ支出を含んでいます。相当量の地震探査、試掘等が既に行われ、大型の中流インフラ整備プロジェクトが計画されていることから、東アフリカの石油ガス市場では今後10年間で数百億ドル規模の投資を集めることが予測されます。
東アフリカは急速に世界的に注目される石油ガスのホットスポットとなりつつあります。長年、同地域市場は石油ガス産業にとって小さい存在であり、アフリカ内においても西アフリカ、北アフリカの急速な開発の影に覆われていたといえるでしょう。しかし、ここ5年間の石油・ガス埋蔵量の発見は東アフリカ諸国に大きい市場機会を提供することになりました。
東アフリカは、面積にして北海の約6倍の広さがある一方、現在までに掘削された坑井は600未満となっています。推定埋蔵量はここ数年間で急速に増加しているのに対し、まだ開発はごく一部にとどまることから将来性は高く、近年メジャー各社の関与が増加していることも同市場の有望性を示唆するものと言えそうです。
モザンビークとタンザニア沖は、その実質的なガス埋蔵量とアジア需要国へのアクセス立地から見て、2010年代終わりにはLNG輸出基地となるポテンシャルがあります。またウガンダとケニアにおける石油の商業生産はそれよりもさらに早く実現する可能性があると考えられます。
