天然ガスはパイプラインで移送されるのが通常ですが、海底パイプラインは陸上より耐用性で劣るため中小距離の敷設にとどまることが一般的となっています。現に日本、オーストラリア、そしてインドネシアといった多くの海洋国は天然ガス産出国からの直接のパイプラインをもっていません。天然ガスを海上輸送するには極低温液化というプロセスを経ます。このプロセスでガスは液化天然ガス(LNG)となり、その体積はガスの600分の1に縮小されLNG船に積載されることになります。運搬、貯蔵後に再ガス化が行われます。
LNGは断熱(保冷)貯蔵システムを備えた運搬船で移送されます。現在でも新規造船で使用されているのが、技術的に最も歴史のあるモス型貯蔵システムです。もう1つはメンブレン方式(GTT No.96, T Mark-III, Mark III Flex)であり、モス型で用いられる断熱球体容器の代わりにメンブレン(膜)を船体内部に貼り付けて断熱しています。積載量5万立方メートル以下の小型船には別の技術が使用されています。
大型LNG船を建造しているのは現在、日本、韓国、そして中国の3カ国です。LNG船市場はガス液化能力と密接に連動するという特徴があります。主要輸入国は東アジア地域、特に日本と韓国である一方、主要輸出国は北米、アフリカ、カタール、オーストラリアなどになります。米国はシェールガスの増産により2年後にはLNG輸出国となるでしょう。
LNG市場の成長に伴うLNG船需要の増大は、中国のガス需要増加に伴う輸入拡大にかかっていると言えるでしょう。中国政府はLNG船を国産で建造する方針でおり、このことは中国で唯一LNG船を建造しているHudong Zonghua社の市場シェア拡大をもたらすと見られます。LNG船の既存受注残高と、液化能力の追加に見合う新規受注見込みを分析し、Visiongain社ではLNG船の世界市場は2015年に74億5000万ドルに達すると推計しています。
